JOURNAL CLUB
Jan 13, 2022
For our first meeting of 2022, we’re excited to invite you to our second Journal Club meeting of the school year! At each journal club meeting, we will discuss an academic journal article to allow for a deeper delve into medical research and to invoke more thoughts and exploration into the world of medicine and healthcare in general. This week’s meeting is on Thursday 1/13 during long lunch from 12:50 to 1:30 pm in Dr. Harley's room (Nichols 330).
We’ll be discussing the article “Bias at warp speed: how AI may contribute to the disparities gap in the time of COVID-19”. This article investigates the presence of bias in AIs and the impact it has on patient outcomes during Covid-19. As technology develops hastily in the medical field especially during these times, it is important to be aware of how accurate our AI collected data is and whether or not it truly represents our diverse population. We highly recommend reading or at least skimming the article before the meeting and we really hope to see you there for an enlightening discussion on this topic!

A study by Dr. Williams and Dr. Rucker on "Understanding and Addressing Racial Disparities in Health Care"

Abstract
Racial disparities in medical care should be understood within the context of racial inequities in societal institutions. Systematic discrimination is not the aberrant behavior of a few but is often supported by institutional policies and unconscious bias based on negative stereotypes. Effectively addressing disparities in the quality of care requires improved data systems, increased regulatory vigilance, and new initiatives to appropriately train medical professionals and recruit more providers from disadvantaged minority backgrounds. Identifying and implementing effective strategies to eliminate racial inequities in health status and medical care should be made a national priority.

Medical Club Diagnosis Event
We are hosting our first patient diagnosis event on Thursday, February 10th during lunch. In this activity, one of our most popular and enjoyed events each year, you are given a sample “patient” complete with a patient profile, family history, symptoms, test results, and more. The goal of the exercise is to play the part of a doctor and diagnosis the patient’s illness. No prior experience is necessary! Our cases are brand new, so there is no repetition from past years.
If you wish to attend, you must signup here. We have limited space, and spots fill up quickly, so make sure to sign up as soon as possible. Once you sign up, we will expect you to come, and we will give you further information.
